Throughout the centuries, there were many areas of Europe in which the Jewish community flourished, making important contributions. This was subject to changes in leadership, or to other forces that were outside of their control. Despite their successes, or perhaps because of these, Jews were often viewed with suspicion; they remained the untrustworthy outsider or “other”. This resulted in the Jews being persecuted and attacked as a community, killed or forced to leave under threat of death. There were many myths and stories about the Jews that got perpetuated over generations, which contributed to the mistrust and hostility often resulting in dangerous or deadly situations for the Jewish community.
