Throughout the centuries, there were many areas of Europe in which the Jewish community flourished, and Jews made important contributions to society at large. This was subject to changes in leadership, or sometimes to other forces that were outside of their control. Despite their successes, or perhaps because of these, Jews were often still viewed with suspicion; they remained the untrustworthy outsider or “other”. This sometimes resulted in the Jews being persecuted and attacked as a community, even killed, or forced to leave under threat of death. There were many myths and stories about the Jews that got perpetuated over generations, which contributed to the mistrust and hostility that would often result in dangerous or deadly situations for the Jewish community.
